Job Responsibilities
- Ensure the safety of all participants throughout the entirety of the swim lesson Instruct swim lessons to children (5 years and older), students, and faculty/staff at the UCCS Recreation Center
- Provide a safe, friendly, and inclusive learning environment
- Arrive 15 minutes before shift in uniform
- Be prepared for your lesson by having equipment ready and teaching station arranged prior to class time
- Enforce facility, aquatics program and pool policies, procedures and regulations
- Act as an ambassador of the Learn-to-Swim and Aquatics programs by being professional, visible, and friendly
- Communicate effectively and efficiently with the Manager of Aquatics & Safety, Aquatics Program Assistant, all lesson participants & guardians, and other AQ staff
- Provide high level of customer service to parents, students and faculty/staff
- Recognize and respond effectively to emergencies through knowledge and application of surveillance and rescue techniques
- Obtain participant feedback and provide input on programs and services
- Responsible for risk management
- Conduct swimmer progress reports, complete logs, reports and statistics, track inventory Record participation data and complete incident and accident reports
- Make recommendations related to learn-to-swim program, purchases and budget when applicable Participate in biyearly job-performance reviews
- Assist lifeguards in enforcing all policies and procedures for the aquatic facility
- Attend and participate in continued education in-services, workshops and sessions
- Assist with Campus Recreation and Aquatics program special events and rentals
Required Qualifications
- Previous experience teaching swim lessons to participants of all ages
- Enjoys working with both children and adults
- Currently enrolled in at least 6 credit hours at UCCS
- Proactive and resourceful with a ‘can-do’ attitude
- American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED certifications or must obtain within 2 weeks of hire
- Must commit to teaching at least 2 private swim lessons each week
- Willingness to take initiative and work independently
- Strong, dynamic interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate to a variety of diverse individuals
- Ability to manage time effectively, create and maintain your own schedule
- Exceptional customer service and leadership skills with the ability to adapt easily to challenging situations
- Ability to effectively work and participate in a collaborative team environment
- Proficient organizational skills
- Positive, upbeat, and professional attitude
- Consistently uphold all Campus Recreation department rules, regulations, and procedures for patron and employee management relations relative to the position; critical thinking, problem solving within limits of department rules and procedures, judgment to identify and apply existing guidelines, training, enforcement, and communication for employees.
- Provide a safe and effective environment for patrons; be alert to accidents and incidents manage these according to training received or report to supervisor accordingly.
- Uphold service ethic, professional appearance standards, and Emergency Action Plan response.
- Serve as a Campus Security Authority (CSA)
Preferred Qualifications
- Current American Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructor (WSI)
- Current American Red Cross certified Lifeguard
- Previous experience working in a Recreation setting
- Completion of a leadership-based training
